Penzance has probably got more flounder fishing spots than any of the other harbours in our area. I have found that the best spots are: - 1/. The Albert Pier. 2/. The Ross Bridge. 3/. Rear of the "Buccaneer Shell Shop". 4/. Rank Steps. 5/. Floating Dock Gate, area. The Albert Pier. When fishing the Albert Pier you will be tempted to cast too far. It is not necessary, as the flounder will almost be at your feet. There is a channel of water on the inside of the pier, which never dries out; this is the place to drop your weight. You will see that you only need to cast a very short distance and your line will be almost vertical all of the time. Ragworm will catch flounder here but I have had most success with lugworm. Using a paternoster of any particular type is best here and you should not then get too much trouble with the crabs. Floating will also prove a good method but I would not bother with the ledger method. You should not need to use a float on your paternoster as you will be fishing fairly close to the pier and as I have said your line will be fairly vertical. As long as your hook length is two to three feet shorter than your weight length you should not have much trouble with the crabs. I have found that the best time to fish here is two hours either side of low water. This is, I think the time when the fish are in the channel. Later or earlier and they seem to have moved to other areas of the harbour.

The Ross Bridge. The period, two hours either side of high tide is best here and again lugworm is a good bait to use. However, rag can be found in this area and, therefore, rag is the best bait to use. The fish can be caught at close range but it is also worth casting as far as you can. If you do this you will need to use a float on your paternoster rig and indeed, actual float fishing, is a good idea. Spooning is also a good idea but the bottom has a few snags, which could cause problems when retrieving your spoon. Buccaneer Shell Shop. The same applies here as I have told you for the Ross Bridge and I do not think that I need to add any further advise.

Rank Steps and Floating Dock Gate. These areas can be good at all states of the tide and all methods can be used. Having said that these areas can be particularly good at low tide. Rag and lug will both catch flounder at these spots so it would be a good idea to have both if you can. Spooning is good here and you should not have too much trouble with the bottom, as it is fairly clear. You will have to be aware that there will be crab problems though. Also, if you are fishing at night you may be troubled with silver eels pinching your bait. It is worth mentioning that if you are fishing the dock gate area it may be worth actually fishing inside the floating dock. Sometimes the flounder swim into the dock when the gate has been opened and they can get trapped in there. You should not need to cast very far so your line will be fairly vertical and will not need a float on it.
