NEWLYN By far the best pier to fish at Newlyn for the flounders is the "Old Quay". Ragworm is the best bait and I have not had much success with lug. Since the new pier was built I have found that floating is the best method but it would be a good idea to go on the bottom casting towards the lifeboat. You will not need to cast very great distances but the bottom is rough and you can loose gear if you are not careful. It is not advisable to cast towards the new pier as you are in danger of loosing your gear on the ledge as you wind it in but floating in that direction can be good. If floating, however, try to keep your float fairly close to the pier. The biggest flounder I ever caught here was about six feet away from me. Also when floating wind in slowly as I have had several very near the surface at this spot. It is also a good idea to try half way along the wall on this pier. A past junior, Malcolm Miller, caught a flounder weighing, I think, 3-12-0 half way along the wall a few years ago whilst I was on the end. You will need to be careful of the boat mooring ropes but it is possible to get between them. I have not heard of very many flounders being caught off the new pier but I have had some off the inside of the North Pier and the inside of the South Pier. In each case you need to be about half way up the piers but on the North pier you will have to try to get a good spot between the boats. Many years ago I had a really good one whilst fishing for mullet on one of the boats. This, unfortunately, was stopped when boat owners started to have items stolen from their boats. It was not, of course, anglers doing the stealing but as usual we got the fault even though the culprit was later found.

MOUSEHOLE The end of either pier is good here but you definitely do not need to cast very far. Normal paternoster without float will catch but I have had most success smack on the bottom with a ledger. The best time to get here is just before the tide starts to go under the gate. You will then catch the flounders on their way into the harbour. It should fish quite well for about an hour or two but then it will be worth casting further into the harbour. Return to the gate area two hours before low water to try to get them on the way out again. Small harbour rag is the best bait here but it is possible to catch them on lug as well. The best time of year to fish at Mousehole is after the gate has been closed for the winter.

PORTHLEVEN. There are several spots that can be fished here but, again, the best spot is by the inner harbour gate. Again it is best to get there just as the tide starts to go under the gate and you do not need to cast very far. Small harbour rag is definitely the bait to have but king rag will be successful as well. I do not think that it would be worth you bothering with lugworm, as although I have tried it I have not had any luck with them. A paternoster rig is definitely the best method here although floating should also be worth trying. Do not be tempted to cast too far and try to keep your bait in front of the gate. The flounder that I have caught here have not been very large but I have heard of some good-sized fish being caught. You can fish on either end of the gate, it does not seem to make much difference but your bait needs to be on the outside of the gate and not inside the harbour.
