Looe Bar can be reached by car or bike via Porthleven and is quite a long bar of shingle and shells with the sea on one side and a fresh water lake on the other side. The beach slopes steeply to the sea and the water is very deep close in. Care must be taken if the sea is rough as the waves, as they retreat, can sweep you off your feet. If it is very rough,
DO NOT FISH LOOE BAR.
Looe Bar can be fished both night and day and many species of fish have been caught there over the years.
During the day, using a float, you can catch Mackerel, Garfish, Mullet and Pollack and the best location on the beach for this is the right hand end,
looking out to sea. There is a fresh water out fall and it is possible to fish from the rocks at this end. Using shervey at this end will help to attract the fish, especially the Mullet.
Fishing on the bottom can also be successful during daylight as it is possible to catch plaice and other flatties. Again, I have found the right hand end more successful but it is not necessary to worry too much if you are fishing on the bottom.
Large baits on the bottom will also attract the bigger pollack and the
occasional Ray and Conger.
I have heard of anglers also catching quite large Bass during daylight at Looe Bar. This is probably due to the fact that the water is so deep so close in but I feel that you will be more successful with Bass during darkness.
This is also the case with the Conger and Ray and by night you could be very surprised at what you catch.

For the pollack and Flatties, by day, I have found worm bait most successful and for the Garfish and Mackerel, whilst floating, mackerel strip and sand eel is the bait.
I have had mullet but the only bait I have found successful has been the soft flesh of mackerel. There should be no skin on the bait and you will find it difficult to keep it on the hook but it can be done.
By night you can use mackerel, frozen sand eel and live sand eel but it is worth changing your bait quite often. Lug worm is a very handy bait to have for the Bass but it is not possible to predict their preference on the day. If you don't have any success with the worm put a sand eel on, it all depends upon the conditions at the time.
The big Ray will be caught on mackerel and sand eel and the Conger will be caught on whole or half mackerel but you will need a fairly Hefty rod for these. I use a solid fibreglass boat road which I fitted with a longer, aluminium, butt section. This modification allows me to cast the bait further out and if any of you are interested in trying for the Conger and you have a boat rod which you need converting I would be happy to help.
My final comment regarding Looe Bar is, expect anything and everything. Almost every species of fish possible has been caught there over the years.

A nice Bass for MBAS Junior
