I lost the biggest Bass that I have ever hooked here. I was on the pier with an old friend of mine, who unfortunately is no longer with us. We had not had very many bites when suddenly my rod was nearly pulled off the pier. It was resting against the wall and I could not believe the power of the bite. I had no idea at the time what was on the end of the rod but managed to get it to the wall of the pier without too much difficulty. When I saw the fish I could not believe my eyes. As it was low water the fish did not look that big and despite my friends suggestion that I should walk it to the steps I attempted to lift it out of the water. This was the biggest mistake I have ever made, as soon as the fish left the water the hook pulled straight out of its mouth. The Bass lay on the surface for about thirty seconds with one eye looking at me. It then gave a kick and was gone. I honestly felt like crying, it really was a good fish and I believe that it would have been close to double figures.

Needless to say I have always made sure that I have had a net with me since then and I will never attempt to lift a fish like that again. You must always expect the unexpected at Lamorna as I have also had a sole from the end of the pier. The main fishing, though, is for Plaice and Flounders on the bottom and Mackerel, Garfish, Pollack and Wrasse on float. If the pier is too crowded to fish there are many decent rock marks around to the right of the cove. The first, which we call Spike Rock, is particularly good and many fine flatfish have been caught from it. If you walk around a little further you will come to a monument on the edge of the cliff and it is easy to walk down to the rocks from this point. Here I have had some good Mullet but you will need some good shervey to attract them. Also here it is possible to catch Conger and large Pollack. Again floating will produce some very nice Mackerel and Garfish.

Left to right: Leo Brown with a Conger Eel, Me with a Sole and Simon Clemens with a Wrasse. All of these fish were caught in the Lamorna Area.
