Local Sea Angling Club wins award

Local Sea Angling Club, Mount's Bay Angling Society has recently been awarded a grant from the European Fishing Tackle Trade Association for the sum of 2000 euros. This sum has also been graciously match funded to the same amount by local bait suppliers Ammodytes based in St Ives giving the club 4000 euros, nearly £2400.

The money will be used by the club to host a series of taster sessions for young people in Penwith over the next three years and introduce them to Sea Angling in West Cornwall. The money will be used to:

Educate new and existing junior club members and participants of the taster sessions to the value and benefits of participation in angling through handouts, leaflets and other means.
To promote Recreational Sea Angling as an all inclusive sport.
To increase the clubs juniors membership especially young women.

The project is looking to engage as many youngsters as possible through the local schools and voluntary. Community groups and will look to build on the successful events that were held in conjunction with Nancalvearne School in 2005.

Club Vice Chairman and Fundraising Officer Anthony Newson said "I am really delighted that we have been successful in obtaining this money. It will give the club a real opportunity to engage with a good number of young people in Penwith and let them have an opportunity to try Sea Angling for themselves".
Club Chairman Mr Peter Maddern said " This is an opportunity for the Club to show that Sea Angling really is an all inclusive sport. We currently have over 50 junior club members and are looking forward to participating in the taster sessions and increasing Junior club Membership". He also went on to say "we should also like to say a special thank-you to both EFTTA and Malcolm Gilbert owner of Ammodytes, in providing the money for the project".

Mr Gilbert said, "Attracting youngsters into a healthy outdoor activity such as Sea Angling is important for a number of reasons. It provides youngsters with an interest which can be developed and is a far better way to spend time rather than hanging around the streets. Sea Anglers come face to face with nature and are likely to develop and appreciation of our marine environment. Through angling they can learn social skills, technical skills with modern fishing tackle and hopefully from time to time take home some of the freshest possible sea food to eat.
Recreational Sea Angling is also economically important, responsible for over half a billion £'s worth of expenditure each year in just England & Wales, supporting 19,000 full time jobs. Many local businesses such as tackle shops, chandler supplies, charter boats and bait suppliers such as my own company, depend on the development of sea angling, as well as the additional expenditure of visiting anglers who select the West Country as their holiday destination due to the sea angling that is available. My own passion for angling started with trout fishing in the streams around West Cornwall and I am now fortunate to be able to visit and sample sea angling in other countries where, incidentally, far more women are seen fishing than in the UK. I frequently see entire families enjoying a fishing trip at places like Massachusetts and New York and that is a trend I'd like to see taking place here in Cornwall".
